The Southwest Spanish Mustang Association is one of the ORIGINAL registries of the Colonial Spanish Horse – founded by one of the ORIGINAL Spanish Mustang Preservationists, Gilbert H. Jones.
Gilbert H. Jones devoted his life to Preserving the Spanish Mustang in Perpetuity.
He served as president of the SMR until 1977 when he founded the SSMA.
The Southwest Spanish Mustang Association (SSMA) was created with one goal in mind, to help ensure the future of the Spanish Mustang horse. As a breed registry, we’re here to support conservation, encourage responsible breeding, and recognize individual ownership of this remarkable horse.
Every registration plays a role in protecting the future of the Spanish Mustang. As new foals arrive each year, it becomes more important than ever to keep accurate records of births, deaths, and transfers. This information helps establish a secure foundation for the breed’s future, and your participation makes all the difference.
Brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 1500s, these horses became the foundation of many North American breeds.
Spanish Mustangs are not only versatile riding partners but also guardians of heritage. Each one carries centuries of resilience, adaptability, and survival in its bloodline.
Preserving and promoting this breed is more than celebrating a horse, it is honoring a legacy that deserves to live on for generations,
