Why We Exist
The Southwest Spanish Mustang Association (SSMA) was founded to preserve and protect one of the most historically significant horses in America—the Colonial Spanish Mustang. Our mission is simple: to safeguard their genetics, register the purest bloodlines, and share their story so future generations recognize the importance of America’s first horse.
Our journey began more than 75 years ago with Gilbert H. Jones, whose research, notes, and dedication brought this rare breed back into focus. His work revealed what we now know through evidence-based history: the Colonial Spanish Mustang traces its roots to the Spanish Conquistadors and to the Native American people who carried forward their legacy.
The Colonial Spanish Mustang is distinct from other horses, including the BLM mustang. Unlike wild herds, these horses have always lived alongside humans, shaping their character into what they are today: intelligent, resilient, strong, compassionate, and spirited.
At SSMA, we believe the story of the Spanish Mustang cannot end here. Their preservation is not just for their sake—it is for humankind. Ensuring the survival of this historic and rare breed begins with each of us.
