JOHN BROWNRIGG – CHAMPION 2012 AND 2014

It has been such an honor to win the National Cavalry competition
once, much less twice. I have to admit that this year Socks carried
me the entire way!  I did not do him justice, by not practicing.  If
he was not such a larger than life and an honest competitor I could
not have done it this year.  The other competitors are such a great
group, but none of them gave any ground away, Socks and I had
to fight to win.  I am proud that I have been given another chance
to showcase what these little horses with big hearts can do.  I hear
people talk down about the Spanish Mustangs and especially that
Frank Hopkins was a liar and there is no way a single horse could
have done all he claimed.  All I have to do is saddle Socks and
show up to make them eat their own words.  He is a great horse
that will literally do anything from rope, shoot, barrels, poles or
just trail ride he is so willing to work and refuses to do a bad job.
I have never ridden a horse with the determination to excel that he
has, and it is an amazing feeling.  I think he has won 4 or 5
buckles, 2 National titles, been in a few old time cowboy round
ups, ranch rodeos, and he is the same consistently with any rider.  I
could go on gushing all day about him and most would think I was
just bragging, but I would never diminish my horse by lying about
him and I know he is just as honest with me.  Lastly I would like to
thank Bryant Rickman for introducing me to these horses over 30
years ago. The only thing that made me a decent rider is that I got
to grow up with some of the best horsemen in the world, Bryant
and Milton Rickman, Shorty Porter, Donny Wheeler and many
others that I can't remember off top of my head. Thank you and to
everyone else that is fighting for these bloodlines.
